Jonah was asked by God to go to Nineveh and preach against the
wickedness of the people. Jonah ran from God and headed for Tarshish. He went to Joppa,
where he found a ship bound for Tarshish. He paid for the trip and boarded the ship. A
violent storm arose and the ship was in threat of breaking up. They threw the cargo over
board to lighten the load of the ship. Jonah was below the deck sleeping. The crew cast lots
to see who was responsible for this storm. The lot fell on Jonah. They asked him who he
was and what he had done. Jonah said, " I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God
of heaven, who made the sea and the land."
The men were terrified and they threw him
over into the water to make the sea calm. But the Lord provided a great fish to
swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. Inside the fish Jonah
prayed to God. Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
